Oak Parkers have chosen to live in their community for a wide variety of reasons, and villagers work together on an impressive range of public and private community initiatives, causes, and projects. In recent years we’ve had many community conversations about the effects of development on the community’s character. New developments bring jobs, more customers for local stores, and new tax revenue. But they also come with important decisions about building size and style, and about the impact on traffic, parking, and community services, which can get lost in the current process.
Our goal is to promote well-planned developments in our village. Oak Park’s development process should allow the community and its governing bodies to have meaningful input into what is built and where. The dialogue should continue from initial proposal to project completion.
The goal of a good process is not to stop development, but to make better development decisions that enhance Oak Park’s unique character while providing the renewal and development it needs to thrive.
An example of an Oak Park building that provides affordable housing and that neighbors, village government officials, and developers can all support is provided below.
